OVERVIEW
“They Came, They Heard, They Saw!”
Early in the week, a group of SAF Pioneers came to Waterways Watch Society to listen and participate in our Boat clean up programme. Even for these gentlemen the experience was still an ‘eye opener’ as one of them said. All of them acknowledged that we could not take our water for granted. For these pioneers it was ‘A March In Time’ because it was an opportunity for them to reminisce on what they have been through witnessing the achievement of Independence and nation-building, and now they were able to hear and see what had been done for the country ever since. Very aptly, one of them remarked that the programme and the experience ‘have not only educated us but will certainly make us your ambassadors in passing this useful information and knowledge to others.’ And this is what Waterways Watch aims to achieve, that is, every Singaporean would be a Champion of the Environment and guardian of our precious waters and waterways.
This week we also had the opportunity to play host to a group of young adult teachers from Hong Kong- EUHK. While on a short visit to Singapore, they found time to learn more about sustainability. Remember we are sharing the same water, air and environment on earth regardless where we come from.
Reflecting on 2022 – Gratefully thank you to all of you!
In a week’s time, we will be coming to the end of another year! It is time to reminisce and reflect. Yes, Year-End is not an end, it is a time to reflect on what’s done and to look forward to a new year, a new beginning. We conducted a total of 404 programmes, of which 126 were for educational institutions and schools and 278 were for corporate organisations. It was not an easy achievement for us considering the Covid-19 situation and a long period of adjustment for all to the new normal in the society and the economic environment. Certainly, we could not have done it all without your support. We celebrate for the effort put in by our volunteers and members and equally important you, our clients who through your participative support, donations and belief made it possible for Waterways Watch Society to continue on its mission. Your support gives us the encouragement to continue our work and we hope to see an even higher number of programmes being conducted in 2023!
Waterways Watch Society also would like to acknowledge the important collaboration we have had with our partners, the various Government agencies who have related interests in environment and water conservation. We hope that our work and feedback have helped in the overall effort to keep our environment and waters safe and clean.
Summary of Activities conducted for the Week
In summary, it was a short week because of the impending Christmas holidays. Even our patrols took their deserved leave because of the festive days. Nevertheless, the following activities were recorded:
- We conducted 2 CSR (a Boat and a Kayak) and 2 VIA (a Foot and a Kayak) programmes which were attended by 36 participants and 45 participants respectively, and together they collected a total of 41 kg of litter.
- This week a total of 45 members were involved for CSR/VIA programmes, talk, patrols, administration, housekeeping duties and training and, the total trash collected = 73 kg.
- Boat Patrol. A total of 3 Boat patrols were carried out; 1 at Marina, 1 at Punggol and 1 at Lakeside.
- Bike Patrol. A Bike patrol was at Marina.
- Pedal boat Patrol. A Pedal Boat patrol was conducted at Marina.
Once again, we thank all members and volunteers, who came for patrol or for facilitating the CSR/VIA programmes, for your time and dedication to the task.
