Dear Friends,   We entered the new year 2018 with a fairly active first week. We had a school beach clean-up with Loyang Primary (90 pax) at Pasir-Ris beach. The beach was extremely dirty that morning and in just a little more than an hour, the students picked up a total of 135kg of litter. We also did one Clean-Up CSR with Home Team (83 pax) and an NYA sponsored kayak program (12 pax). We then ended off our week with our weekend patrols at Marina and Punggol with a total of 36 members (which includes 4 new members). We also had an on-site meeting with a SIT student doing his Final Year Project (FYP) for our biodiversity pond and two in-house meetings (Jurong Branch Steering Committee and WWS Family Carnival Committee) on Sunday, 7th January 2018.   During this short week, our members engaged a total of 10 fishermen. Among them, 6 are Chinese youths whom are spotted at Marina floating platform, 2 of them are Western teenagers who were seen in front of the Esplanade, and 2 Chinese (father and son) spotted near Sunrise bridge. Our members have engaged them politely to fish in legal fishing zones and all 10 has complied. During our patrols, we also engaged 3 individuals who are seen smoking under the shelters of Marina Bay Sands (MBS) and Waterway Point at Punggol. Of which the Indian couple smoking underneath bridge beside waterway point complied, disposed their cigarettes and left after being advised that it is a no smoking area. The other individual sighted smoking under MBS also complied.   We also note the more frequent sightings of PMDs in Kallang Park (Expat family of 5 in eco-riders, groups of 3-4 riding on other types of PMDs and Single PEBs (often seen speeding). Our members at Punggol reports the same situation.   Waterways Watch Society continues looking for Sponsors and Donors in 2018.   From January 2018 onwards, we implemented a more systematic record for our boat usage. This is to ensure prompt maintenance and servicing of our boats are done.
