This week was a rather relaxing one for our Society, allowing us to get some well-deserved rest after two busy weeks of activities. Nevertheless, we continued to deliver several programmes during the week. A school talk sponsored by NWCDC was conducted at Riverside Primary School for approximately 100 students. We also organized a corporate clean-up programme at Marina Reservoir for 70 staffs from ANZ, and a kayak clean-up programme for 34 students from Ngee Ann Polytechnic, School of Design and Environment’s Green Group (DeGreenGroup).
Besides our regular patrols at Punggol on Tuesday and Thursday, a total of 34 members were on duty for weekend patrols. We welcomed two new members for both Punggol and Marina each. During the patrols in Marina and Punggol, our members conducted a total of 20 fishing engagements and 150 anti-littering engagements. We also sighted a family of 17 otters at Tom Nam Beach on Sunday morning, which attracted many photographers and curious park users as always. In addition, 4 safety boat services were done this week.
Persistent sightings of speeding Personal Mobility Devices (PMD) and Power-Assisted Bicycles (PAB) in our parks remain a major concern to our society. Many riders/cyclists do not alert or warn fellow park users but were seen yelling at others to give way. As mentioned previously, we have yet to receive our authority letters from LTA. Also, given the restricted authority assigned to the card, our members can only do little in enforcement.
Interestingly, there was an increase in the number of individuals, mainly foreigners, visiting our office to learn more about our work. Over the weekend a veterinarian from Kenya paid us a visit and enquired about our cause and a possible internship position for his son. Two visitors from Northeast India, working in a water company, also came to learn about WWS and enquired about internships. We also had a British visitor who wished to find out if he could bring along his nephews to volunteer with us next week. This provides strong and positive profiling for WWS and Singapore as a whole.
