OVERVIEW
“Essentiality of Proper Trash Disposal for a Sustainable Future”
In the face of shifting weather patterns, the link between weather changes and responsible waste disposal is undeniable. As rainfall becomes more frequent, the risk of litter polluting our waterways intensifies. To counteract this, individuals and communities must prioritise proper waste management to protect our vital water sources.
Proper trash disposal is essential for safeguarding the environment, human health, and community well-being. It plays a crucial role in environmental protection by preventing pollution of air, water, and soil, thus minimising harm to ecosystems and wildlife. Additionally, responsible waste management reduces the risk of disease spread and enhances water quality, as rain can carry litter into waterways, impacting both drinking water and aquatic ecosystems. Beyond the environmental benefits, proper disposal contributes to aesthetically pleasing public spaces, fostering community pride. Moreover, it aligns with legal requirements, avoiding potential repercussions. Resource conservation is inherent in waste management, particularly through recycling, which reduces the demand for new raw materials and lowers energy consumption. Ultimately, sustainable waste practices support long-term environmental sustainability, making proper trash disposal a cornerstone of a clean, healthy, and resilient future.
The foundation of responsible waste disposal lies in using designated trash bins. This small act prevents litter from being carried away by the wind or rain, maintaining the cleanliness of our surroundings. Recycling plays a crucial role in reducing environmental impact, lessening the burden on landfills, and preserving natural resources.
Summary of Activities conducted for the Week
In summary, the following activities were done for this week:
- We conducted 8 CSR and 0 VIA programs which were attended by 227 participants, and together they collected a total of 237 kg of litter. It was a hectic week for us.
- This week a total of 72 members were involved in CSR/VIA programs, talk, patrols, administration, housekeeping duties, and training.
- The total trash collected by the patrol groups was 82 kg.
- Boat Patrol. 4 boat patrols were carried out; 2 at Marina, 1 at Punggol, and 1 at Jurong Lakeside.
- Bike Patrol. A total of 2 Bike patrols were carried out; 1 at Marina and 1 at Punggol.
- Pedal boat Patrol. No Patrol.
- Foot Patrol. 1 foot patrol was carried out at Pang-Sua Pond.
- Gardening. A team of 7 pax for gardening at Marina for both Sunday and Saturday.
Once again, we sincerely thank all members and volunteers, who came for patrol or for facilitating the CSR/VIA programs, for your time and dedication to the task. Without your support we would not have been able to achieve this. Special mention to the teachers of Pathlight who came down in strength to participate in our kayak cleanup programme. Three cheers to the teachers, students and our facilitators! Young and old, we all must care for our environment. Sustainability is the only way forward.
