Dear Friends,
OVERVIEW
“Coastal Cleanup: A Fin-Tastic Work”
In a heartwarming display of corporate social responsibility, HP Company teamed up with the Waterways Watch Society to orchestrate a coastal clean-up event that left a lasting impact. Together, they rallied their collective efforts and managed to collect an impressive 476 kilograms of trash, not only underscoring their dedication to environmental well-being but also shining a light on the critical issue of water pollution and its profound effects on both people and marine life.
Water pollution is an intricate and concerning problem that touches lives in profound ways. It poses grave threats to our health, particularly in communities where access to clean water and healthcare resources is limited. In such places, diseases like cholera and dysentery can spread rapidly, making clean water a lifeline. The pollutants – plastics, chemicals, oil spills – infiltrate these waters, endangering marine life. The painful truth is that our aquatic friends often become ensnared in or ingest these harmful substances, leading to injuries and even death. The intricate balance of marine ecosystems is disrupted, affecting the delicate web of life beneath the waves. Biodiversity loss, a heartbreaking consequence of water pollution, touches the soul. As pollutants accumulate and disrupt the natural harmony of aquatic environments, native species struggle to adapt. This affects not only them but also the entire food chain, setting off a chain reaction of ecological imbalances.
In closing, the coastal clean-up event, driven by HP Company’s dedication to corporate social responsibility, embodies the power of collective action in tackling environmental challenges. As they continue to advocate for responsible environmental practices, we move closer to a future where our waterways thrive, our communities flourish, and our marine life dances to the rhythm of a healthier, happier ocean.
SPF recently hosted their first CSR event geared towards engaging with youth with WWS, but regrettably, the turnout was less than anticipated, with only seven participants. It is worth considering that this lower attendance might reflect a need for increased awareness among young individuals about the significance of making a positive impact. The organising team’s dedication and commitment are certainly appreciated and we hope to work closely with them again in the future!
This week also highlights the ongoing problem of trash bags being vandalised by crows outside. We need to take a stand and urge the authorities to take tangible action to address this recurring issue.
Summary of Activities conducted for the Week
In summary, the following activities were done for this week:
- We conducted 10 CSR and 2 VIA programs which were attended by 428 participants, and together they collected a total of 894 kg of litter. It was a hectic week for us. Well done!
- This week a total of 159 members were involved in CSR/VIA programs, talk, patrols, administration, housekeeping duties, and training.
- The total trash collected by the patrol groups was 55 kg.
- Boat Patrol. 4 boat patrols were carried out; 2 at Marina, 1 at Lakeside, and 1 at Punggol.
- Bike Patrol. A total of 3 Bike patrols were carried out; 1at Marina, 1 at Punggol, and 1 at Lakeside.
- Pedal boat Patrol. No Patrol.
- Foot Patrol. No Patrol.
- Gardening. A team of 7 pax for gardening at Marina.
Once again, we sincerely thank all members and volunteers, who came for patrol or for facilitating the CSR/VIA programs, for your time and dedication to the task. Without your support we would not have been able to achieve this. Special mention to the teachers of Pathlight who came down in strength to participate in our kayak cleanup programme. Three cheers to the teachers, students and our facilitators! Young and old, we all must care for our environment. Sustainability is the only way forward.
