Dear Friends,
OVERVIEW
Hooked on Harm: The Hidden Toll of Illegal Fishing
This week, we want to shed light on the serious impact of illegal fishing on our waterways. Recently, one of our members came across a distressing scene in the marina reservoir near Kallang Riverside: a red-eared slider tortoise with a fishing hook lodged in its throat. The tortoise had also become entangled in a fishing line, which posed an immediate threat to its well-being.
Fortunately, our member, Luke, was able to carefully cut the tortoise free from the fishing line. Recognizing the severity of the situation, he promptly contacted NParks the following day, and they responded swiftly to collect the injured tortoise for further care.
In addition to this troubling discovery, we also found several fishing hooks and other debris around the area. These discarded hooks not only endanger wildlife but also contribute to the broader issue of pollution in our waterways. This incident highlights the urgent need to address illegal fishing practices and proper disposal of fishing gear to protect our local ecosystems. We encourage everyone to follow fishing regulations and report any illegal activities to help keep our waterways safe for all creatures.
