Dear Friends,

OVERVIEW

It is time to become more serious about managing and reducing litter, not just aiming for zero waste. Our regular patrols in Punggol, Lakeside, and Marina frequently report littering in areas where construction for public and national events occurs. We consistently find evidence of cigarette butts (often in no-smoking areas), plastic bottles, cans, food wrappers, and styrofoam boxes left behind by contractors. Why aren’t heavier penalties imposed for such irresponsible behaviour? It is unreasonable that while contributing to these celebrations, these individuals also leave their litter for others to clean up. This is unproductive, meaningless, and, most importantly, poor manners.

The enclosed areas during pre- and post-construction work allow these workers to essentially “do what they want.” We have never seen any enforcement officers present, and WWS patrols are not permitted to enter these zones. This situation is completely unacceptable, and it is time we address and manage this recalcitrant behaviour seriously. For example, public cleaners face demerit points and penalties if they do not perform their duties properly and efficiently. Every public complaint results in points against them (S$1).

This week we had in-house training on Tuesday and an Exco meeting on Sunday.
